The Children Day of Burma was celebrated at SAW High School, which is the one of the migrant schools in Mae Sot, opened by Social Action for Women. February 13 is the birthday of Burma Independence leader General Aung San, the father of detained pro democracy leader Aung San Su Kyu. Aung San was born in Febraury 13, 1915 in Netmauk in Megawe Division of Central Burma and was assassinated by an armed group in July 19, 1947 at a Cabinet meeting in Yangoon.
In Burma, General Aung San's birthday is recognized as Children Day of Burma and celebrated throughout the country. However, the military regime tries to forbid celebrating his birthday as well as Children Day. It is to eliminate Aung San's image among the new generation.
SAW aims to celebrate it to always remember about the great leader and independent hero of Burma who worked hard for the country, to remember and respect his integrity, braveness, patient and good leadership skills which are the model for the younger generation and to become the young generation little Aung San.
During the celebration, SAW school gave prizes to the outstanding students of each grade from last year as well as awarded the outstanding students who took part in the contests of essay, drawing, General Aung San addresses, and sports. It also exhibited the historic photos of Aung San. It made a lot of fun activities and distributed toys to the children.
